What is breast lift surgery or mastopexy

The appearance of the breasts changes with age, resulting in loss of skin elasticity, alteration of the position and shape of the breasts. The breasts naturally sag over the years, especially after childbirth, breastfeeding, or large fluctuations in body weight. They lose their normal fullness and shape. Hormonal changes and pregnancy also play a role in the process of breast sagging.

Breast lift is a procedure in Džepina Clinic that is aimed at correction of the breast position on the chest wall. Mastopexy without implants is the procedure of choice for patients who are satisfied with the size of their breasts. In patients whose breasts have lost volume, implant placement is recommended in combination with lifting for even better results. Usually this procedure is performed in women who have significant weight loss or after pregnancy. In patients with sagging breasts, the areolas (pigmented part of the breast around the nipple) are often enlarged, and they should be corrected during the operation.

Who are the candidates for breast lift surgery

Candidates for surgery are women of different ages who are not happy with the shape and position of the breasts on the chest wall, as well as the size and position of the nipples. These patients may have sagging breast skin as well as marked excess skin. Women seeking breast lift should have realistic expectations of this surgery.

Breast lift procedure

After consultation, physical examination and analysis of medical history, and depending on the patient’s age, the degree of breast ptosis, skin elasticity and the volume of glandular tissue, Dr. Džepina will suggest the type of procedure that is best suited to the patient.

There are three main surgical techniques used to correct sagging breasts. When there is minimal ptosis of the breast, the correction can be done with a circular incision around the nipples. For small and medium breast ptosis, “vertical mastopexy” is used, with an incision that is placed around the nipple and one vertical incision from the nipple to the inframammary fold. For breasts with significant ptosis, an inverted “T” incision is necessary, and in that case, in addition to the incision around the nipple and the vertical incision, an incision is made in the breast fold.

The operation lasts from 2.5 to 3.5 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. After the appropriate incision is made, the excess skin is removed, and the size of the nipple is reduced. The next stage is shaping and lifting the glandular tissue, which will give a fuller breast and allow for proper nipple position. If the volume of glandular tissue is not sufficient, and the patient wants fuller breasts, a silicone implant is placed in a position below the pectoral muscle. After the operation, the patient stays in the clinic for 24 hours, and before going home, the drains are removed and a suitable support bra is put on.

Recovery after breast lift surgery

Recovery after breast lift surgery is individual and depends on the complexity of the surgery. Return to daily activities is allowed after 2 to 3 weeks, and for more demanding physical activity it is necessary to wait until the recovery process of approximately 6 weeks is completed.

Postoperative pain is mild and usually it is not necessary to take pain medication. The sutures used in this operation are placed under the skin and the body will gradually dissolve those sutures, so it is not necessary to remove them. The results of this surgery are long-lasting, but in the case of large weight gain or loss, pregnancy, as well as the natural ageing process, recurrence of breast ptosis is possible.

Complications associated with mastopexy are, bleeding, possibility of infection, changes in nipple sensation and problems with wound healing. Patients are given comprehensive information about the surgery with detailed instructions for postoperative recovery.
